Music and Me!

Hey Guys! My name is Kalea Allison 😋! I am a Freshman and my major is Biology! I am originally from North Carolina but I moved here to South Carolina 7 years ago! I am 18 years old and I graduated from Dorman High School 😺.

My music experience started way back in my elementary music class when we would use boom sticks and learned how to play hot cross buns on the recorder. When I was in chorus in middle school, those were some of the most fun memories ever. I made some amazing friends and even had the pleasure of having a solo my 7th grade year. 🎤

In high school, I was in chorus in my 10th and 12th grade years. I managed to get a solo as well during my senior year. Though my major is Biology, I have found ways to be involved in music even here in college. For fall semester, I was in Chorale and got to sing one of my favorite duet pieces so far. With my small history with music, I have come to love, dislike, and grow connected to certain songs or even a whole genre of music.

One of the genres of music I'm interested in the most right now is R&B.  I can be in the car, walking to class, or doing anything and the first thing I go to put on is R&B. I like how smooth the music is and how the words just make sense and are relatable. One song that has been on repeat is "We all try" by Frank Ocean. I have been listening to him on repeat for the past couple of months and I just really like his vibe and his lyricism. I have always loved his music, but recently his music has just been hitting differently. Frank Ocean makes some slow and fast songs, you can always find a song to match your vibe because his music is just that good! Some other artists that fit in the " R&B" Genre that I listen to are Lucky Daye, PartyNextDoor, Giveon, Ambré, Destin Conrad, and Nobu Woods.

A genre of music that has sentimental meaning to me is KPOP, which is basically pop music in Korean! The artists whom I find the most meaningful are Jhope from BTS and Gsoul, a solo artist. Both these artists have helped me through some of the hardest times by being bright, uplifting, and encouraging. Though some people hate on K-pop because they "don't understand it" or because of songs like "Butter" by BTS (which I don't like either, but guys HAVE MERCY!🙏😭) I wish they would take the time to get to know the old BTS I found and try to listen to songs like Coffee or ON (not the Sia version...) because they are actually really good. As for Gsoul, I actually got to see him in concert for my first one. It was very memorable and he also introduced me to another artist I love as well! The concert was so good and everyone was so nice. GSoul has very uplifting songs, and one of my favorites that I listened to all the time is "Confidence". Honestly, the whole Hate everything album from him is top tier!

Now lastly, there aren't any genres that I don't like because I basically listen to any and everything, and I mean literally, but there is one song I can't quite connect to and it's " Texas Hold' Em" by Beyoncé. I think that all of Beyoncé's old songs are really good, but her Cowboy Carter album isn't really the best.  I feel the country genre wasn't really made for her but overall she is a great singer!

  1. Hey Kalea! I love listening to R&B also, and I listen to a lot of SZA and Summer Walker songs! I also couldn't connect really to Beyonce's new album, and "Texas Hold' Em" was fun for awhile but it kind of got "overplayed", in my opinion. My coach loves that song and used to play it at practice all the time, which was not a popular opinion on my team, and we wouldn't really like it haha.

  2. I liked reading your blog because of the variety it has. The most interest song for me was “Confidence” because of the type of rhythm it had. I enjoy it and the one I liked the most was Frank Ocean “We All Try”. It reminded me of a song I used to listen to a lot.

  3. Hi Kalea, I also love R&B, Frank Ocean is one of my favorites. The song you recommended from him is really amazing! I’ve never heard of GSoul before but after listening to Confidence, I’ll definitely dive more into his music. Also I agree that people should give BTS’s old music a try since their older albums contain some of their best tracks.

  4. Hey Kalea, I've been into R&B too! I love how you expressed how it is smooth and relatable because I would say the same too. I find it interesting how you mentioned that people don't give K-pop a try because I am guilty of that, but to be honest the song Confidence is pretty good. I might add it to my playlist.

  5. Hi Kalea, I love R&B so much and I think my favorite song you put is definitely We All Try by Frank Ocean because the lyrics are very meaningful and well thought out and his unique incredibly popular sound has changed the modern music industry, his music is so good, and he might be one of my favorite artists. I think the most interesting music you put is Confidence because while I’m not a huge fan of K-pop I do enjoy this song, and I know K-pop gets a bad wrap because of the huge artists and the super obsessed fans but there are some pretty good songs that even I enjoy despite not liking the genre very much! I also agree with your take on Beyonce’s album while I don’t really like country, I also just don’t think that country works very well with her kind of voice and music type.

  6. Hello Kalea, I was excited to listen to the song from Frank Ocean because he is one of my tops, so it was awesome to hear that. R&B is also my top genre I would say. I also would agree with you on Beyonce's song and album, I do not think it was the best at all, but I still would enjoy it time to time.

  7. Hey Kalea!! I don't really listen to Frank Ocean, but he has a great voice! I would also have to agree with you about Beyonce. I'm not a huge fan of her "Texas Hold Em'" song. I personally don't think her normal style fits in with the Country Music style, but that's just what I think. Thanks for sharing!! :)

  8. Hey Kalea! I love how music has been such a big part of your life, from those elementary school recorded days to now being involved in Chorale in college. It’s awesome that you’ve found ways to keep music in your life even while pursuing biology!
Your R&B taste is solid; Frank Ocean is always a vibe, and "We All Try" is such a beautiful song. His lyricism just hits differently depending on where you are in life, and that’s what makes his music so special. As for Texas Hold 'Em, yes, I get it. Sometimes, even our faves take a musical turn that doesn’t quite click.

  9. Hello Kalea, I would have to agree with you on disliking Beyonce's "Texas Hold Em" I just don't think it fits in with her vibe as an artist. I will agree with you on the fact a lot of her old music is better than some of her newer music.

  10. hii, I agree with you about Beyonces "Texas hold em". This song doesn't really fit her style and the songs we grew up with. However, I admire how you are open to every genre of music.
